The first step to a successful patio starts with removing any and all organic material (i.e. sod, topsoil, roots, etc). Typically a minimum of six inches below existing grade, or until reaching undisturbed subsoil.
W use only clear, crushed stone in our base. This means an angular limestone that has been washed clean of any fine particles smaller than 3/4". Because there are no fine particles to hold the moisture, this base material provides excellent drainage as well.
6" thickness for pedestrian applications and up to 12" for vehicular traffic.
Proper compaction is a crucial step in maintaining maximum strength and ensuring no settling over time. The use of vibratory drum rollers and plate compactors remove any space from between the aggregate. The sharp corners of the stones become locked together forming a tight bond.
A thin layer of 1/4 inch clear, crushed stone is meticulously spread on top of the compacted base layer. This provides an exceptionally well-draining bedding layer for the paving stones to be laid on.
Paving stones are manufactured locally, and are available in a variety of colours, textures, and sizes. Utilizing a mix of different sizes and colours we can create an endless amount of design possibilities.
This is a mix of fine sand and polymers, used to fill the joints between paving stones. With compaction and the application of water, it will harden like concrete when dry.
